Product Overview

The short version

A 384x288 handheld thermal monocular with a laser rangefinder built into the body, good to 1,000 meters, in a package that weighs 322 grams.

The Xeno is a scanning tool. It has no reticle and it does not go on a rifle. Find the animal, range it, decide whether it is worth the walk, then go back to the rifle.

Scan first, then shoot

Glassing a field through a rifle scope means pointing a loaded rifle at everything you want to look at. A handheld solves that, and the Xeno adds the part most handhelds leave out: a laser rangefinder in the same body, so you know whether the heat signature at the far fence is 180 yards out or 500 before you decide anything.

The core is 384x288 at 12 micron pitch with NETD at or under 25mK, behind a 25mm F1.0 lens. Optical magnification runs 2.39x with digital zoom stepping to 19.11x. The field is wide enough to sweep a pasture without spinning in circles, and picture-in-picture keeps a magnified window up top once you have found something worth a closer look.

Rangefinder to 1,000 m

905nm class 1 laser, accurate to within a meter from 6 to 60 meters and within two meters out to 400. Scan and range without swapping devices.

Two batteries in the box

Two rechargeable 18650 cells, up to 8 hours each, plus the charger. It also runs off an external pack over USB-C.

Records and streams

Onboard photo, video and audio to a microSD card, plus Wi-Fi to the BA Global Defense Connect app on iOS and Android.

Hot track and scene modes

Hot track marks the warmest thing in frame. Jungle and recognition scene modes retune the image for heavy cover or open ground.

What it is not

The Xeno has no reticle and no ballistic calculator, because it is not built to sit on a rifle. If you want thermal you can shoot through, that is the Riddik 640 or the Lensor 384. What the Xeno does is keep you from burning a night walking toward a warm rock.

One thing to know before you buy

The Xeno is rated IP66 rather than IP67, so it handles heavy rain and hosing down but is not rated for submersion the way the Riddik and Lensor scopes are. Dropping it in the creek is a warranty conversation, not a shrug. If you want to compare handhelds before you commit, the Pocket K3 is the other pocketable thermal we stock, and the thermal buyer's guide covers how sensor size plays out at real distances.

Questions people actually ask

Can I mount it on a rifle?

No. There is no reticle, no zero, and no mount. It is a handheld for finding and ranging animals. Pair it with a thermal scope and use each one for the job it is built for.

How far can it actually see?

BA does not publish a detection range figure for this model, so we are not going to invent one. What we can tell you is the rangefinder reads to 1,000 meters, and a 384x288 core on a 25mm F1.0 lens is a scanning optic rather than a long-range identification tool. You will spot heat well past the distance at which you can tell a sow from a boar.

How long does the battery last?

Up to 8 hours on one 18650. Two rechargeable cells and a charger come in the box, which is roughly 16 hours if you swap, and it will run off an external power pack over USB-C.

Does it record?

Yes. Photos, video and audio to a microSD card, plus Wi-Fi to the BA Global Defense Connect app on iOS and Android for a live view and for pulling footage to your phone.

What do the scene modes do?

Jungle mode tunes the image for heavy cover, where you are picking a warm shape out of a lot of competing clutter. Recognition mode favors edge definition on open ground. Both are menu selections, and most people settle on one and leave it.

Can I use it during the day?

Yes. Thermal reads heat rather than light, so daylight is fine, and it earns its keep finding a downed animal in thick cover at midday. More on that in our write-up on using a thermal scope during the day.
