Match the footprint
A red dot only fits a mount cut for its footprint, the pattern of screws and posts on its base. Common footprints here include the Trijicon RMR, Trijicon RMSc, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, Docter, Aimpoint Micro and Holosun 509. Many other red dots share one of these patterns, so check your optic's manual for its footprint, then find it in the product name.
Pistol optic plates
Optics-ready pistols use a plate between the slide and the optic. Springfield Armory makes plates for the Prodigy and Echelon, Colt makes them for the 1911, Python, Anaconda and King Cobra, HK makes them for the VP9, and Ruger makes them for the 57. EGW makes RMR and Doctor mounts for Glock, Sig Sauer, S&W M&P, Springfield Hellcat, Ruger Mark series and Max-9, and Colt Python/Anaconda. Radian's Guardian optic guards for Glock MOS are here too.
Rifle and carbine mounts
On an AR, red dot height decides how the dot lines up with iron sights. Absolute co-witness puts the dot on the irons, and lower 1/3 co-witness puts the irons in the bottom third of the window. KDG SideLok, UTG and Midwest Industries mounts are listed by co-witness height. BCM's AT mounts are listed at 1.93" high. Warne and TruGlo 45 degree offset mounts put a backup dot beside your scope, and CVA's plates mount a dot on its Scout rifles and muzzleloaders.
Frequently asked questions
What is a red dot footprint?
The screw and post pattern on the bottom of the optic. Your mount or plate has to match it, and each product here lists the footprint.
Absolute or lower 1/3 co-witness?
Absolute puts the dot right on your iron sights. Lower 1/3 sits the irons lower in the window for a cleaner view through the optic. Both work, it comes down to preference.
Do I need a plate for my optics-ready pistol?
Usually, unless your optic matches the slide cut directly. Find your pistol and optic in the product name to get the right plate.
