Spring Assisted Knives
Short version: a spring assisted knife opens fast with one hand. You push the thumb stud or flipper to start the blade, and a spring takes it the rest of the way. We carry assisted folders from Smith & Wesson, Ruko, Real Avid, SOG and CRKT.

How assisted opening works
A small torsion spring or bar sits against the blade. It holds the knife closed until you move the blade a short way, then it takes over and drives it open. Nothing fires on its own. You started it, and that is the line between an assisted opener and an automatic.
In practice an assisted folder opens nearly as fast as an automatic and works with a gloved hand on a cold morning in the stand.
What we carry
Smith & Wesson has the most models here, including the 24/7, the Extreme Ops, the S.W.A.T. and the M&P assisted folders. Ruko offers spring assist folders, including a blackout model and a compact rescue knife. Real Avid's RAV-2, RAV-3, RAV-4 and RAV-7 are assisted, SOG's Twitch III is a slim assisted folder built for pocket carry, and several Outdoor Edge Razor VX1 and VX2 folders combine spring assist with replaceable blades.
Flipper or thumb stud
A flipper is a tab on the back of the blade that your index finger pulls down. It keeps your thumb clear of the edge and opens with a natural motion. A thumb stud sits on the blade and you roll it open with your thumb. Try the motion you already use on your current knife and stay with it.
Spring assisted knife FAQs
Is a spring assisted knife the same as a switchblade?
No. A switchblade, or automatic, opens on its own from a button. An assisted knife needs you to start the blade by hand. For automatics, see our automatic knives.
Are spring assisted knives legal?
Many places treat assisted openers differently from automatics, but the rules are set by states and cities and they vary. Check your local law before you carry.
Does the spring wear out?
Springs can lose tension over years of use. Keep the pivot clean and lightly oiled. If a knife starts opening sluggishly, cleaning the pivot usually brings it back.
