1280 Thermal Scopes
Short version: 1280 thermal scopes carry a 1280x1024 sensor, over 1.3 million pixels and four times the count of a 640. It is the highest resolution we carry, priced to match. The scopes and clip-ons below come from AGM, ATN, Nocpix and RIX.

What four times the pixels buys
A 1280x1024 core has 1,310,720 pixels against 327,680 on a 640. The extra detail shows up when you zoom: a 1280 image holds its edges at magnifications where a 640 starts to blur. With the same lens and pixel size, the larger sensor also covers a wider field of view, so you can scan more ground at a given magnification and still have the pixels to zoom in on what you find.
| Core | Pixels | Compared with 384 | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 256x192 | 49,152 | Less than half | Close work and budget builds |
| 384x288 | 110,592 | Baseline | Most coyote and hog setups |
| 640x512 | 327,680 | About 3x | Identification at distance, heavy zoom |
| 1280x1024 | 1,310,720 | About 12x | Maximum detail, big open country |
Who actually needs 1280
Hunters who glass big open country at night, run long calling setups across wide fields, or want to identify an animal well before it closes the distance. Guides and serious predator hunters who spend most nights behind the scope get the most from it. If your shots stay moderate, a 640 thermal scope covers it for a good deal less.
Lens size still matters
The millimeter figure in the model name is the objective lens. An AGM Adder 60-1280 is a 60mm lens on a 1280 core. Bigger lenses give more base magnification and reach, and most 1280 scopes use large lenses to put all that resolution to work at distance.
Sensor resolution vs display resolution
Spec sheets list the sensor and the screen separately. On a 1280 scope the display is often very high resolution too, and the sensor line is still the one that decides how much detail you see. Compare 1280x1024 sensors to each other, and treat the screen as a secondary spec.
Check the law before the first hunt
Whether you can hunt with thermal depends on your state, the species and the season. Your state wildlife agency's current regulations are the final word.
1280 thermal scope FAQs
Is a 1280 thermal scope worth it over a 640?
If you hunt open ground at long range and lean on zoom, yes. For most hunters a 640 already shows enough to identify game at normal distances, and the price gap is large.
Why do 1280 thermal scopes cost so much?
The thermal sensor is the most expensive part of the scope, and a 1280 core has four times the pixels of a 640. Bigger lenses to match add to the cost.
Can you use a 1280 thermal scope during the day?
Yes. Thermal reads heat, so it works in daylight. Contrast can drop around sunrise and sunset, when the ground and the animal sit at similar temperatures.
Is it legal to hunt with a thermal scope?
It depends on your state, the species and the season. Check your state wildlife agency's regulations before you hunt.
