Tall Bipods

A lot of deer are shot by hunters sitting down, in a ground blind, against a tree or on a field edge, and a short prone bipod can't reach that high. Tall bipods extend into the low-to-mid 20s so the scope lands at eye level from a seat.

Which height is right for sitting

The number that matters is the distance from the ground to your eye when you are sitting the way you hunt. On a low ground seat or sitting flat against a tree, a bipod reaching the high teens can be enough. On a taller blind chair, you will want legs that reach the mid 20s. Measure once at home with your chair and the rifle and you will know which range to buy.

Tall bipods in a ground blind

Shooting through a blind window, the rifle needs to sit high enough to clear the sill and steady enough to hold on a lane for a long wait. A tall bipod set on the blind floor does both, and it keeps the muzzle back from the window where it is less likely to be seen.

Leg locks and adjustment

Longer legs give more leverage to any looseness in the joints, so leg locks matter more on tall bipods than short ones. Notched legs click to set heights and are quick to match. Twist or lever locks allow any height in between, which helps on uneven ground. Independent legs let you set one shorter than the other on a slope.

Tall bipod or shooting sticks

A tall bipod rides on the rifle, so it is always there, and it is steadier sitting than most sticks. Sticks come off the rifle, reach standing height, and don't add weight to the gun you carry. Hunters who sit in one spot tend to prefer the bipod. Hunters who move tend to prefer sticks.

Tall bipod FAQs

How tall of a bipod do I need to shoot sitting?

Most hunters sitting on a stool or blind chair need a bipod that reaches somewhere in the low-to-mid 20 inch range. Measure your seated eye height with your chair to be sure.

Can a tall bipod also shoot prone?

Many collapse to around a foot at their shortest, which is tall for prone but workable over grass. Check the minimum height on each listing.

Can I shoot standing with a bipod?

Rifle bipods rarely reach standing height. Use shooting sticks for standing shots.
