Calls

Our waterfowl calls come from two makers: Power Calls, with single and double reed duck calls, short reed goose calls and specialty calls for specks, snows, teal and wood ducks, and Haydel's, with simple mallard, Canada and snow goose calls. New callers should start with a double reed duck call. Then pick a goose call for the birds you actually hunt.

Duck Calls: Single Reed or Double Reed

This is the decision that matters most on the duck side. A single reed call has more range and volume, and it rewards practice with a lot of control over tone. It also squeaks and honks when your air is off. A double reed is more forgiving, produces a raspier hen sound, and is easier to run quietly in timber. Power Calls makes both versions of several models (Jolt and Jolt2, Impact and Impact2, Impulse and Impulse2), so you can stay in one family and move up later.

The duck call page also carries a teal call, a wood duck call and a 6-in-1 duck whistle.

Goose Calls: Short Reeds and Specialty Calls

Most of the goose side is short reed Canada goose calls from Power Calls: Current, Surge, Ion, Frequency, Wavelength and Gravity. Short reeds are louder and more versatile than flute-style calls, but they take practice to learn. Specklebelly hunters have the Spark and Strike, and snow goose hunters have the Power Calls Clash and the Haydel's snow goose call. See the full lineup on our goose calls page.

Wood, Polycarbonate and Premium Builds

Several Power Calls models are sold in more than one build. The Frequency comes in standard, African Blackwood and Carbon listings; the Wavelength and Gravity in standard, Carbon and CTi; the Charge and Spark in African Blackwood. Build material changes the tone and the price. The reed setup changes how the call runs. Choose the model that fits your air first, then decide whether a premium build is worth it to you.

Calls need a home on your chest. Our call lanyards include a Power Calls 7-in-1 lanyard and a tuning kit.

Calling Is Half the Setup

A call brings birds closer to look. What they see then decides the shot. Run your calls over a believable spread of duck decoys or goose decoys, and hide well. Call less when birds are working, and watch their reaction to every sequence.

Practice, Then Pack Smart

The off-season is when calling improves. Practice short sequences you will actually use, record yourself, and compare it to real birds. In season, carry your calls in a blind bag or on the lanyard, not loose in a pocket full of shells. Add some motion from our motion decoys on calm days, and bring waterfowl choke tubes that match your load so the shots you call in are ones you can finish.

Waterfowl Calls FAQs

Which duck call is easiest for beginners?

A double reed call. It is more forgiving of uneven air and makes a good hen sound with less practice. Power Calls' Jolt2, Impact2 and Volt2 are double reed models.

Do I need a separate call for specklebellies and snow geese?

It helps. A Canada goose call can make some speck sounds, but a dedicated speck call makes the laughing yodel much easier. Snow goose calls are built for their higher, busier sound.

What is the difference between Power Calls and Haydel's?

Both make waterfowl calls. On this shelf, Haydel's offers a few simple, lower-priced mallard and goose calls, and Power Calls has a much wider range of models and builds.
