Lighting

Two different jobs share this aisle. There is camp lighting, where you want your hands free and enough beam to find the tent stake you just tripped over, and there is predator lighting, where you need to reach several hundred yards and control exactly how much light lands out there. Both are here, and the gear does not cross over well, so buy for the job.

Headlamps and spotlights for camp

  • Cyclops EFLEX 400 ($34.99): 400 lumens off a 4W CREE XP-G3 in an ABS housing, with white, red, green, and blue output and High, Medium, Low, and SOS modes. The red is what you use in a tent at 5 a.m. without blinding everybody.
  • Cyclops Poseidon ($74.99): 2,000 lumens from a 20W CREE XHP5.02, with a 200-meter reach and up to 5 hours of runtime. IPX4 weather resistance and a rugged anodized housing, running on one included 21700 battery. Multiple output levels down to 3% power, plus a strobe mode.
  • Cyclops REVO 6000 ($199.99): three CREE XHP70.2 70-watt LEDs for 6,000 lumens, rechargeable, with a dual-function 12-24V car charger on a 3-meter coil cord.
  • HME Hand Warmer ($37.99): 4,400 mAh of Li-ion that heats your hands from 110 to 118°F, tops off a phone, and throws a white LED beam. Roughly 5 hours of run time and about 3 hours to recharge.

Predator lights

The HME Original Coyote Light ($269.99) catches eyes past 800 yards and mounts on a gun or scope via an integrated Picatinny rail, with variable focus from flood for scanning to spot for reaching out. It is designed, engineered, and built in the USA. The Coyote Light Pro ($309.99) pushes past 1,000 yards on a solid-state LED rated at 65,000 hours, and adds an auxiliary jack for an external dimmer mounted on the gun or monopod.

The reason both run variable intensity rather than a simple on-off is that a coyote at 300 yards spooks off a full-power beam. Dial it down to scan, bring it up only once the animal is committed.
