Swivel Bipods
Ground is rarely level where the deer are. Swivel and tilt bipods let the rifle cant side to side while the legs stay planted, so you can level your crosshairs on a hillside or rocky ground without fiddling with leg lengths. Pan models add left-right rotation to track a moving animal.

Swivel, cant and tilt
These words get used for the same feature. The rifle rotates around the bore line on the bipod head, so when one leg sits lower than the other you roll the rifle back to level instead of adjusting a leg. A tension knob sets how freely it moves, from loose for quick corrections to locked solid.
A canted rifle shoots off to the low side at distance, so this matters more the farther you shoot. On a 100 yard whitetail shot it is a comfort feature. On a 400 yard hillside shot it becomes a miss prevention feature.
Pan
Pan lets the rifle rotate left and right on the bipod without lifting it. You can follow a deer walking across a field edge or shift between shooting lanes while staying in position. Some bipods pan freely, others lock with a lever.
When a fixed bipod is enough
On a bench, a flat field or a blind floor, a fixed bipod does the job with fewer moving parts and less weight. If you hunt hills, creek bottoms, rocky ground or anywhere you shoot off whatever is in front of you, the swivel earns its place.
Swivel bipod FAQs
What is the difference between a swivel and a pivot bipod?
Most makers use both words for the same side-to-side cant. Check whether a model also pans left and right, which is a separate feature.
Do I need a swivel bipod for hunting?
If you hunt anywhere with uneven ground, it is the most useful upgrade over a fixed bipod.
Does a swivel bipod wobble?
Not with the tension set correctly. Tighten the knob until the rifle holds its position without your hand on it.
