Replaceable Blade Knives
Short version: a replaceable blade knife holds a thin, scalpel-sharp blade that you swap out when it dulls. You get a factory edge on the whole animal without stopping to sharpen. Outdoor Edge's Razor line makes up most of this page, with Schrade Enrage, Hogue Expel and spare blade packs alongside.

How replaceable blade knives work
The handle is a holder. The blade locks into it, and a release lets you slide the dull one out and a fresh one in. Because the blades are thin and ground for cutting only, they are extremely sharp out of the package and stay that way through a lot of hide.
The tradeoff is strength. A thin blade is made for slicing, so do not pry with it, twist it in a joint or use it to split a pelvis. That is what a saw or a heavier fixed blade is for.
The Outdoor Edge Razor line
Outdoor Edge builds the widest range here. The RazorLite folders come in 3 and 3.5 inch sizes. The Razor Pro and RazorMax add more handle, the Razor VX and XD series are folders in a range of handle styles, and the Razor-Mini is a small one for the pack or the truck. Spare blades are sold in drop point, utility and caping shapes, so one handle can skin, cape and cut cord.
Buying replacement blades
Match the blade to the system. Replacement blades are made for a specific handle, and the product name says which one. Schrade sells separate Enrage 6 and Enrage 7 replacement blades, and the Hogue Expel uses #60 and #70 style blades. Buy a spare pack with the knife. Running out on the second deer is the only real downside of these.
Replaceable blade knife FAQs
Are replaceable blade knives good for skinning deer?
Yes. The thin, sharp edge is ideal for separating hide. Keep a traditional knife or a saw for heavy cuts through bone and joints.
Do replacement blades fit other brands?
Assume they do not. Buy blades made for your knife's system, and check the product name for the model it fits.
Can you sharpen a replaceable blade?
They are designed to be replaced, which is the point. A few light passes on a fine stone can touch one up in a pinch. For knives you do sharpen, see our knife sharpeners.
