Gun Cases

Short version: measure your gun from muzzle to butt pad (with the scope on) and buy the gun case one size up. This shelf is mostly padded soft rifle and shotgun cases from Allen in 37 to 54 inch lengths, plus floating and waterproof shotgun cases for duck hunters, gun socks, neoprene slips and small handgun cases.

Sizing a rifle case or shotgun case

Length is the only spec that really decides fit, and the titles here carry it: 37, 38, 40, 41, 42, 46, 48, 52 and 54 inch cases. Measure overall length with the optic mounted, then add a couple of inches so the zipper is not fighting the barrel. If your rifle wears a bipod, measure with it folded and attached, or plan to pull it before casing the gun.

Allen labels several cases for a rifle type: a 40 inch scoped case, a Ruger case at 40 and 46 inches and Marlin cases at 42 inches. Those names describe the intended gun, so check the length against your own rather than trusting the badge alone.

Soft rifle cases for the truck and the range

Most of this shelf is padded soft cases, which suit vehicle travel and walking a gun from the parking lot to the line. The Durango, Daytona, Rollins and Centennial lines each come in both rifle and shotgun lengths, so two guns can travel in matching cases. Prices climb with the Battalion, Bedrock and Punisher models, so compare features on the product pages. If you are heading to the bench, a case and a range bag cover nearly everything, with shooting ear protection riding in the bag.

Floating and waterproof shotgun cases for waterfowl

Duck boats and flooded timber are hard on guns, and a case that sinks makes for a very short morning. The shelf has floating shotgun cases from Allen, Alps Outdoorz, Ducks Unlimited and MOmarsh, plus waterproof rifle and shotgun cases from Alps and Ducks Unlimited. Higdon's Bottomland gun case rounds it out. Hunters who sit in duck blinds all morning tend to want a case that can sit in a puddle without complaint. Build the rest of your duck hunting gear list around it, starting with blind bags and a set of waterfowl choke tubes.

Handgun cases, socks and slips

For pistols, there are 11 and 13 inch fabric pistol cases, a hardshell handgun case and a Rollins double handgun case. Knit gun socks at 52 inches keep dust and scratches off a gun stored in a safe, and neoprene shotgun slips do the same job for a gun riding in a blind. Allen also lists shotgun and rifle stock sleeves and buttstock shell holders, which keep a few spare rounds on the gun itself. Storing for the long haul is easier with dehumidifiers and racks from the gun safe accessories shelf.

Gun Cases FAQs

What size gun case do I need for a scoped rifle?

Measure overall length with the scope mounted and choose the next case length up. Add a couple of inches of room so the zipper closes without strain.

Can I fly with one of these cases?

Airlines and states set their own rules for transporting firearms, so check with your airline and your state agency before you book. The cases on this shelf are aimed at vehicle travel and field use.

Which cases float?

The ones with "floating" in the title. Allen, Alps Outdoorz, Ducks Unlimited and MOmarsh each have one on this shelf.
