Athlon Cronus ATS P-Mini 250S: Your Questions, Answered
It is a brand-new release, so the honest answers are hard to find. Here are straight ones to what hunters actually want to know before they buy.
How far can the P-Mini 250S detect?
Up to roughly 550 yards for a large heat source like a hog or a person against a cool background. Keep in mind that detection means spotting that something warm is out there, not identifying what it is.
What is the difference between detection, recognition, and identification range?
Detection is "there is a heat signature out there." Recognition is "that is an animal, not a fence post." Identification is "that is a coyote, not a deer." Each step requires the target to be closer, so a 550-yard detection number does not mean you will positively identify an animal at 550 yards. It is the honest way to read any thermal spec.
Can I use it during the day, or only at night?
Both. Thermal reads heat, not light, so it works in total darkness, bright daylight, and everything in between. It can be a genuinely useful daytime tool for spotting bedded animals in cover your eyes would walk right past.
Is this a thermal scope or a handheld monocular? Can I mount it on my rifle?
It is a handheld observation monocular, built for scanning, scouting, and tracking, not for mounting on a firearm as an aiming optic. If you want a weapon-mounted thermal, browse our thermal scopes and night vision optics, and we are happy to point you to the right one.
Is a 256x192 sensor good enough?
For a compact, pocketable unit at this price, yes. The 256x192 thermal sensor paired with a 12-micron pixel pitch is the sweet spot for scouting and short-to-mid-range scanning. Higher-resolution sensors exist, but they come in larger, far more expensive units. For the job this device is built for, the image is crisp and clean.
What does NETD 30mK mean, and why should I care?
NETD measures how small a temperature difference the sensor can pick up, and lower is better. At 30mK or less, the P-Mini distinguishes subtle heat differences, which means more contrast and detail: a deer separating cleanly from the brush behind it instead of blending into a warm blob. It is one of the specs that actually matters for image quality.
What magnification does it have? Can it zoom?
It offers 1-4x magnification through a 10mm F1.0 objective, with a 13.1 by 13.1 degree field of view, unlimited eye relief, and a 1.43-inch OLED touchscreen. Start wide to scan a field or tree line fast, then zoom in once you have spotted something.
How long does the battery last, and is it rechargeable?
It runs 6 or more hours on a single charge from its rechargeable 18500 battery. It charges over standard USB-C (5V/2A), so you can also power it off a portable battery pack in the field, which is handy on long sits or multi-day trips.
Does it record video and take photos?
Yes. It has onboard photo and video recording with audio, captured at 624x466 to 32GB of built-in memory, so you can save the hunt, document a recovery, or pull stills to share later.
Does it have Wi-Fi or a phone app?
Yes. Built-in Wi-Fi connects to the Athlon Thermal app for iOS and Android for real-time viewing and control from your phone, which is useful for letting someone else see what you are seeing, or recording to your device.
What are the color palettes for?
Seven selectable palettes: White Hot, Black Hot, Red Hot, Iron Red, Blue Hot, Green Hot, and Sepia, plus adjustable brightness, contrast, and preset scene modes. Different palettes suit different conditions and personal preference, and most hunters keep one or two favorites and switch based on terrain and time of day.
How big and heavy is it? Will it really fit in a pocket?
It is genuinely compact: 4.37 inches long, a 1.9-inch tube diameter, and 7.23 ounces. It drops into a coat or pack pocket and disappears, which is the whole point of the P-Mini name.
Can thermal see through walls, glass, or fog?
Through walls, no, that is a movie myth; thermal reads surface heat, not what is behind solid objects. Through glass, also no, glass blocks thermal, so you cannot scan through a windshield or window. Through fog, smoke, and light brush, better than your naked eye or night vision, because heat cuts through obscurants that block visible light. It is one of thermal's real advantages.
Is it waterproof and tough enough for real hunting conditions?
Yes. It carries an IP66 waterproof rating and is both fog proof and shockproof, built to shrug off rain, dust, and the knocks of field use. It operates from -4 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, so it holds up from cold winter sits to hot summer hog hunts.
Thermal vs. night vision: which is better?
They solve different problems. Night vision amplifies existing light and shows a familiar-looking scene, but it needs some ambient light and can be fooled by camouflage and cover. Thermal needs no light at all and detects heat, so it spots a warm animal hiding in shadow or brush that night vision would miss. For finding game in the dark, thermal wins. For navigating and seeing fine detail, night vision has its place.
What is the warranty?
Athlon backs it with a 5-year thermal warranty from the date of purchase, covering manufacturer defects. Registration with proof of purchase, model, and serial number is required to activate it. It does not cover misuse, theft, unauthorized repairs, or modifications like hydro-dipping or painting.
What can I actually use it for?
Plenty: locating and tracking hogs and predators after dark, scouting bedded deer, blood-trailing and recovering downed game, spotting animals across a field at first or last light, and keeping an eye on your property. Built-in hot spot tracking automatically flags the warmest object in the frame, which speeds up finding game in clutter. Anything with a heat signature lights up.
Is it legal to hunt with thermal where I live?
Thermal laws vary widely by state and by species. Many states allow it for hogs and predators but restrict it for game animals. Check your state's thermal hunting regulations before you head out. We cannot give legal advice, but we would hate for you to learn the rules the hard way.
How much is it, and where can I buy it?
It is 399.00 dollars here at Double D Hunting, in stock and ready to ship. Athlon's MSRP is 499.99 dollars.
How is the P-Mini 250S different from the other Athlon Cronus ATS thermals?
The P-Mini is the compact, budget-friendly entry point: smallest, lightest, and easiest to carry. Step up to units like the Cronus ATS PRO 25P-250 and you gain range, magnification, and a larger sensor, at a higher price and size. If you want maximum portability and value, the P-Mini is the one. If you need to reach out farther, take a look at the rest of our thermal optics lineup and we can walk you through the bigger models.
Product Overview
Good thermal used to mean carrying a brick and taking out a second mortgage. The Athlon Cronus ATS P-MINI 250S rethinks that. It is a genuinely capable thermal monocular small enough to live in a jacket pocket, pairing a 12-micron sensor with a crisp full-color touchscreen and built-in Wi-Fi. Whether you are scanning a field for varmints after dark or keeping watch over the property, it turns total darkness into a clear, detailed picture out to 550 yards.
