Small enough that you actually carry it
A thermal left in the truck finds nothing. That is the entire argument for the P-Mini. At 4.37 inches long with a 1.9 inch tube and 7.23 ounces on the scale, it drops into a jacket pocket and stops being a decision you have to make before every walk to the stand.
The compromise you would expect at that size is a soft image, and it mostly is not here. The 256x192 sensor runs a 12 micron pixel pitch with NETD under 30mK, which is the number that governs how cleanly a deer separates from the brush behind it. Lower NETD means the sensor resolves smaller temperature differences, so you get contrast and edges instead of one warm smear.

What 550 yards actually means
Detection range is the most misread number on any thermal spec sheet, so here is the honest version. Detection means the sensor tells you something warm is out there. Recognition means you can tell it is an animal rather than a fence post. Identification means you can call it a coyote rather than a deer. Each step needs the target closer, so 550 yards is the distance at which a large heat source shows up as a signature, not the distance at which you will name it.
For the work this thing is built for, that is plenty. Scanning a field edge at last light, picking bedded animals out of cover, following a blood trail after dark, and checking what set the dog off. Hot spot tracking flags the warmest object in frame automatically, which saves real time when you are sweeping a cluttered tree line.

Questions people actually ask
How far can it really see?
550 yards detection on a large heat source against a cool background. Detection means you know something warm is there. Telling a hog from a deer takes considerably less distance, and identifying a specific animal takes less again. Any thermal spec sheet works this way, so read every detection number the same skeptical way.
Can I mount it on a rifle?
No. It is a handheld observation monocular built for scanning, scouting, and tracking. For a weapon-mounted thermal, the thermal scopes and night vision optics category is where to look, and we are happy to point you at the right one for your setup.
Is a 256x192 sensor good enough?
For a pocketable unit at this price, yes. The 12 micron pixel pitch and sub-30mK NETD do more for real-world image quality than the raw pixel count suggests. Bigger sensors exist and they are excellent, and they also come in units four times the size and several times the price. For scouting and short to mid range scanning, this one earns its keep.
How long does the battery last?
Six or more hours at room temperature on the rechargeable 18500 cell. Cold weather will shorten that, as it does with every thermal. It charges over standard USB-C at 5V/2A, so a portable power bank keeps you running on long sits or multi-day trips.
Does it work in daylight, and can it see through things?
Daylight is fine. Thermal reads heat rather than light, so it works in full sun and total dark alike, and it is genuinely useful for spotting bedded animals your eyes slide right past. It will not see through walls or glass, both of which block thermal entirely. Fog, smoke, and light brush it handles better than your eyes do. More on that in using thermal during the day.
Is thermal legal where I hunt?
It depends on your state and the species. Plenty of states allow thermal for hogs and predators while restricting it for game animals, and the rules change. Check the thermal hunting laws by state before you head out. We cannot give legal advice, and we would rather you not find out the hard way.
