Higdon Pulsator PRO vs XS: What Actually Changed

Higdon Motion DecoysUpdated August 6, 2026

TL;DR4 min read

PRO is the current generation and XS is what it replaced. The real differences are a sealed IPX7 motor and battery housing, a redesigned pump and impeller, and a magnetic charge port. Batteries cross over both ways, but XS battery packs were recalled in 2023 and PRO packs were not.

The Short Answer

If you are shopping today, you are buying PRO. Higdon replaced the XS Series with it, and every Pulsator, Swimmer, and Flasher in our catalog is the PRO generation. The XS name still shows up in searches because a lot of those units are still in boats and still working.

What Higdon Changed

Higdon Pulsator PRO Canada Goose throwing water in a spread
IPX7 sealing, a redesigned pump and impeller, and a magnetic charge port.
Area What the PRO Series brought
Sealing IPX7 rated motor and battery housing, so water intrusion is designed out rather than sealed around
Pump Custom-designed pump and impeller that displaces more water, which is what you actually see on the surface
Charging Magnetic charge port and the PRO Series Magnetic Charger, instead of a plug you fumble with in the dark
Timing Digital timer with a sequence tuned for a rocking, feeding motion rather than a constant churn
Batteries 12 volt lithium-ion packs, UL certified, in single 2600 mAh and double 5200 mAh sizes

The practical version: the PRO moves more water, survives getting swamped, and charges without a fight. On a Pulsator PRO you get seven hours from the single pack and fourteen from the double.

Do the Batteries Cross Over?

Yes, in both directions. The PRO Series Single and Double batteries are compatible with all PRO Series and XS Series Higdon products, which is genuinely useful if you run a mixed fleet.

The wiring is where people get caught. On PRO products, connect the power cord and the charging cord. On XS products, connect the power cord only, and leave the charging cord alone. It is marked "For PRO only" and does not need to be connected for an XS unit to run.

The Recall Is Part of This Decision

In March 2023, Higdon recalled the lithium-ion battery packs used in XS Series motion decoys, along with XS replacement packs, for a fire and burn hazard. Recalled packs are identified by a sticker reading "Sun Li-ion Battery". Roughly 45,000 units were sold in the United States.

PRO Series packs are not covered by it. If you are weighing a used XS unit against a new PRO, factor in that the battery may need replacing before you can safely hunt it. Full detail is on the parts and battery page.

Pulsator vs a Wind Spinner

These get compared, and they should not be. A spinning wing decoy flashes to pull birds from a distance. A Pulsator moves water to close them. On heavily pressured public ground, spinners get birds looking from far off and then flare them at forty yards, while water motion tends to keep working right into the hole.

Most spreads want both, used at different moments. The full motion decoy comparison lays out where each one earns its place.

Common Questions

What is the difference between the Higdon Pulsator PRO and XS?

PRO is the current generation. It brought an IPX7 rated motor and battery housing, a custom pump and impeller that displaces more water, a magnetic charge port, and a retuned digital timer. XS is the series it replaced.

Are Higdon PRO and XS batteries interchangeable?

Yes. The PRO Series Single and Double battery packs work with all PRO Series and XS Series Higdon products. On PRO units connect both the power cord and the charging cord, on XS units connect the power cord only.

Is the Higdon XS Pulsator still sold?

Higdon replaced the XS Series with the PRO Series, so new units are PRO. Double D Hunting stocks PRO Series Pulsators along with a few XS service parts for people keeping older units running.

Should I buy a used Higdon XS Pulsator?

Check the battery first. XS Series battery packs were recalled in March 2023 for a fire hazard, identified by a sticker reading "Sun Li-ion Battery". Budget for a replacement pack if the one included is a recalled unit.

Is a Pulsator better than a spinning wing decoy?

They do different jobs. A spinning wing flashes to pull birds from a distance, while a Pulsator moves water to finish them in the hole. On pressured water, spinners can flare late-season birds where water motion usually keeps working.
