Thermal Scopes
Short version: pick a thermal scope by sensor resolution first, then magnification range, then decide if a built-in rangefinder is worth the extra cost. Resolution is the 256, 384, 640 or 1280 in the name, and each has its own page below. ATN, AGM, Pulsar and Nocpix make up most of this shelf. Clip-ons from ATN, Sig, Nocpix, Pulsar, Armasight and Athlon let you keep your day scope.

Thermal scope resolution, explained
The sensor is the expensive part of a thermal scope, and its resolution decides how much detail you get. The ATN Tico 6 clip-ons spell it out in their names: 256x192, 384x288 and 640x512. The first figure is the one shops and brands shorten it to.
More pixels let you identify an animal at a longer distance and give a cleaner picture when you zoom digitally. Fewer pixels keep the price down, and at hog-in-the-feeder distances a 256 can do the job. Here is how our shelf breaks down:
| Sensor | Best fit | Shop |
|---|---|---|
| 256 | Entry thermal, short-range hogs, feeder setups | 256 thermal scopes |
| 384 | The workhorse for hogs and coyotes over fields | 384 thermal scopes |
| 640 | Clear identification at distance, open country | 640 thermal scopes |
| 1280 | Maximum detail for hunters who live at night | 1280 thermal scopes |
A few scopes use sensors between those steps. Pard's Ocelot and Pantera list 480, and AGM lists a Rattler V2 at 320. They live on this page.
Magnification and lens size on thermal rifle scopes
Thermal scope names often pack in two more numbers. ATN Thor models list a zoom range like 3-24x or 4-16x. AGM models use a lens figure followed by resolution, such as Rattler V2 35-384 or Adder V2 50-640, where the first number is the objective lens in millimeters. A bigger lens usually means more base magnification and a narrower field of view. A smaller lens gives a wider view for scanning close cover. Hunters sitting over a feeder lean small; hunters watching a long field lean large.
Base magnification is optical. Anything above it on a thermal is digital zoom, which enlarges pixels rather than adding detail. That is one more reason resolution matters.
Built-in rangefinders, clip-ons and bow sights
About 21 of the scopes here carry LRF in the name, meaning a laser rangefinder is built in. That saves you from pulling a separate rangefinder in the dark. It adds cost and some weight.
Clip-on thermals mount in front of your existing day scope. You keep your reticle and zero, and the rifle goes back to daytime duty when you remove the unit. The Nocpix Mate Ultra, Pulsar Krypton 2, Sig Echo CV25, Armasight Jockey, ATN Tico 6 and Athlon Cronus ATS Pro are all clip-ons. They make the most sense if you already own a good rifle scope.
Bowhunters get one oddity: BA Global Defense lists the NOC thermal bow sight here. Compare it with standard bow sights if you are new to the idea.
Mounting and running a thermal scope
Check each scope's tube size or mount type before ordering rings. If the product page lists a 30mm tube, pair it with 30mm scope rings; if it ships with its own mount, follow the maker's setup. If you swap a thermal and a day scope on the same rifle, quick detach scope mounts make the change faster, though always confirm zero after a swap. A rifle bipod steadies the shot once the animal is in the reticle.
Most experienced night hunters scan with a handheld thermal monocular and only raise the rifle once they have a target. Add a predator call for coyotes. Rules on hunting with thermal optics vary by state and species, so check with your state wildlife agency first.
Thermal Scope FAQs
Is a 384 thermal scope good enough for hog hunting?
For most hog hunting at typical field and feeder distances, 384 is a common choice. Step to 640 if you regularly need to identify animals farther out.
What is the difference between a thermal scope and a thermal clip-on?
A thermal scope replaces your day optic and has its own reticle. A clip-on sits in front of the day scope you already zeroed, so you keep that reticle.
Do thermal scopes work in daylight?
Yes. Thermal reads heat, not light, so it works day or night. Hot ground and sun-warmed objects can reduce contrast in midday heat.
Is it legal to hunt with a thermal scope?
It depends on your state, the species and sometimes the season. Check with your state wildlife agency before hunting with one.
