Slings

A rifle sling frees both hands on the walk in and steadies the gun once you get there. This shelf carries 186 slings for rifles and shotguns, from basic padded straps to adjustable two-point slings, ammo slings with shell loops and backpack-style carry slings. Choose by how you attach it first, then by width and padding for the weight you carry.

Start with how the rifle sling attaches

Most hunting rifles have two sling studs, one under the forend and one in the buttstock. A sling with swivels included (several Allen and TOC models say so in the title) clips straight on. A sling without them needs a pair of 1 inch or 1.25 inch swivels sized to the strap, which is why sling swivels sits right next door. Modern sporting rifles often use QD cups or M-LOK points instead, and the slings marked QD here are meant for those. Width in the title (1 inch or 1.25 inch) has to match your swivel loops.

Two-point, single-point and convertible slings

A two-point sling attaches at the front and rear and is the standard carry sling for hunting. Grovtec's QS two-point models (Sentinel, Sentry, Sabre) and Red Rock Gear's D1 and D2 sit in this group. Single-point slings from Phase 5, Tac Shield and J&E Machine Tech attach near the rear of the receiver and let the gun hang in front of the body, which suits short carries more than long walks. Red Rock Gear's C-series slings convert between two-point and one-point, and Grovtec and J&E offer three-point and bungee versions for shooters who want something in between.

Padding, materials and comfort on a long walk

Weight is what makes a gun sling feel cheap or worth every penny on a mile-long hike to the stand. Neoprene and padded slings (TOC Super Sling, Elite Neoprene, Bulldog Deluxe Padded, Grovtec Premium Padded) spread a heavy rifle across the shoulder. Quake's Claw, Claw Contour and Slimline slings come in a spread of colors, from black and OD green to snow and Mossy Oak. Crickett has black leather slings, TOC makes paracord versions and Grovtec's Flex sling uses an elastic strap. If you hike in with a pack, check the hunting packs shelf too, since a sling and pack strap end up sharing the same shoulder.

Shotgun slings, ammo slings and backpack carry

Shotgunners have their own picks: Butler Creek and Beretta shotgun slings, Avian X Havoc shotgun slings and Allen's Hypa-Lite models. 1791 Gunleather's Hunt ammo slings carry cartridges on the strap in rifle and 12 gauge versions, and Browning's sling with cartridge holder does the same job. For hands-free hiking, the TOC Backpack Neoprene sling and the Grovtec MOLLE backpack sling are built for carrying the gun on your back. Turkey hunters juggling a gun, a seat, a turkey vest and a gun freshly fitted with turkey choke tubes tend to appreciate that, and so do waterfowlers carrying duck decoys on the other shoulder.

Slings FAQs

What is the best rifle sling for deer hunting?

A padded two-point sling with swivels that match your studs covers most deer rifles. Add a sling stud bipod later if you want a rest, and confirm the stud is free for both.

Do these slings come with swivels?

Some do. Look for "with swivels" in the title. If it is not there, plan on buying swivels separately.

What size swivel does my sling need?

Match the swivel loop to the strap width listed in the title, usually 1 inch or 1.25 inch.
