DeSantis
DeSantis makes the largest range of leather holsters here. Inside the waistband: the Insider, Inside Heat, Summer Heat, Soft Tuck and Flex-Tuk. Outside: the Mini Scabbard, including cuts for the Glock 19, Thumb Break Scabbard, Speed Scabbard and Mini Slide. The Die Hard ankle holster is top-grain leather on a sheepskin-lined leg band, and the Wild Hog is a single action revolver holster for the Colt SAA, Ruger Single Six and Ruger Wrangler.
1791 Gunleather
1791 builds belt holsters for pistols, RVH and Revolver Thumb Break holsters for revolvers by frame and barrel, and the Smooth Concealment IWB in soft, breathable cowhide with an open top. Many come in black, classic brown and signature brown, and several are multi-fit so one holster covers a family of similar guns.
Bond Arms
Bond Arms makes fully lined premium leather holsters for its own derringers, including belt loop, clip and thumbsnap holsters. The Bond Arms driving holster is a cross-draw design for carrying in a vehicle.
For long-barrel revolvers in the field, shoulder holsters keep the gun clear of a pack belt. Women's holsters and holsters for big dudes are sorted by fit, with leather options in both.
Breaking in a leather holster
A new leather holster is tight on purpose. Wear it with the unloaded gun for a few days, drawing and reholstering slowly, and it will ease to a smooth draw while keeping its grip on the gun. Do not stretch it with oil or force a gun in, which can ruin the retention.
Leather or Kydex
Leather is quieter and more comfortable against skin, and it suits a blued revolver or a hunting handgun. Kydex is thinner, needs no break-in and keeps its mouth open for one-handed reholstering. Many shooters use leather for revolvers and the field, and Kydex for daily concealed carry. Pistols with a mounted light need a dedicated holster; see holsters for guns with lights or lasers.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a leather holster take to break in?
Usually a few days of wear and slow practice draws with the unloaded gun. Thick, lined holsters can take a little longer.
Will a leather holster scratch my gun's finish?
Lined leather holsters like the DeSantis Die Hard and the Bond Arms holsters are lined to protect the finish. Over many years, any holster will add some holster wear, which many owners consider part of the look.
How should I care for a leather holster?
Keep it dry, wipe off dirt, and use a light leather conditioner occasionally. Avoid soaking it or storing a gun in it long term in humid conditions.
