Trail Cameras & Accessories

Trail cameras from Tactacam, Spypoint and Stealth Cam, with the batteries, solar panels, mounts and security boxes that keep them running. Decide first between cellular and SD card. Cellular cameras send photos to your phone so you stay out of the woods. SD-card cameras cost less to run but need a walk-in to check.

Cellular vs SD-Card Trail Cameras

Most of the cameras here are cellular. Tactacam's Reveal X and Reveal Pro (3.0 and 4.0 generations, also sold as 2-packs), Spypoint's Flex and Flex-M2 (both listed as dual carrier), and Stealth Cam's Fusion X and Revolver models all send images over a cell network. That means a data plan, but it also means you check the camera from the couch and only walk in to swap batteries.

Stealth Cam's GMAX32 and Quick Set models record to a card. They suit places with no signal, or hunters who would rather not add another monthly bill. You will pull the card in person, so set them where a walk-in will not blow out the deer you are watching.

Power: Batteries and Solar Panels

Power is where trail cameras quietly fail. Every photo a cellular camera uploads costs power, and cold nights drain batteries faster. The fix is a rechargeable pack or a solar panel. Tactacam owners have FlexPack R5 and R10 rechargeable batteries, a lithium cartridge, a battery belt, and the Solar Panel R5 and Folding Solar Panel 12V. Spypoint has lithium packs and solar panels, and Stealth Cam has rechargeable lithium packs. Battery packs are often specific to a camera generation, so check the listing before you buy. The tactacam solar panel page lays out the Tactacam options side by side.

Mounting and Protecting Trail Cameras

A camera strapped flat to a tree usually points at the ground or the sky. Mounts fix that. Tactacam's Tree Mount 3.0, T-Post Camera Mount and Adjustable Camera Stake, and Spypoint's adjustable mounting arm, let you aim the lens down a trail or over a plot. Security boxes for the Reveal (Gen 3.0 and Gen 4.0) are the usual answer for cameras on public ground or near a road. For more on mounts and boxes, see trail camera mounts.

Carrying a dozen cameras, cards and batteries in a grocery bag gets old. ALPS makes the Motive, a pack built around trail camera gear. General hunting packs work too.

Where to Hang a Trail Camera

Point it at what deer already use: a trail into a food source, a scrape line, or the edge of a deer attractant site. Aim north or south if you can, so the sun does not wash out morning or evening shots. Once the photos show a pattern, hang a stand nearby and wear a harness from our treestand safety harnesses page. Keep your own scent down with scent eliminators when you check them.

Trail Camera FAQs

Do cellular trail cameras need a data plan?

Yes. A cellular camera sends images over a cell network, which takes a plan. Check the brand's current plan options before you buy, and confirm coverage where the camera will hang.

What size SD card do I need?

Check the camera listing for the supported card size. Spypoint sells a 32GB micro SD card on this page.

Can I use a trail camera for property security?

You can, but a camera built for the job is easier. The Tactacam Defend models on our security cameras page are made for that use.
