Choosing airgun pellets by shape
Caliber is fixed by the barrel. Shape is where you get to choose. Wadcutters have a flat face that punches clean holes in paper, which is why the Beeman and Daisy flat-head tins sell to target shooters. Domed pellets, like the RWS Superdome, H&N Baracuda and Benjamin domed lines, are the general-purpose pick and usually the first thing to try in a new rifle. Pointed and hollow point pellets round out the lineup for people chasing a specific result.
Match shooters have their own corner. RWS R10 Match, Eley Tenex and Daisy match grade pellets are made for paper competition. Every barrel has its preferences, so buy a sampler first: the RWS .177 pellet sampler and the Gamo assorted combos exist for exactly that. A radar chronograph will tell you which pellet runs most consistently.
Slugs and big bore
Slugs are solid, bullet-shaped projectiles for PCP rifles that handle them. JTS Dead Center slugs run from .22 up to .357, and Hatsan's Apolo line adds .22 and .25 slugs in several weights. For the largest bores, the Benjamin .457 pellets, the Hatsan Apolo .30 and .35 Air Boss and the Hatsan Vortex Big Bore Supreme are on this page. Check the weight your rifle's maker recommends before buying a case of anything.
Magazines, pumps and CO2
Spare magazines are the cheapest upgrade an air rifle owner can make. They are also the easiest thing to buy wrong, because each one fits specific models. Read the gun name in the title, then read it again. PCP owners can fill from a multi-stage hand pump or step up to one of the JTS portable compressors. CO2 guns run on the Crosman Powerlets here.
Outfitting the rest of the rifle? Most air rifles take a scope on rimfire and dovetail scope rings or a rail mount, so confirm your rail type before buying glass from riflescopes or red dots. A soft or hard case from gun cases protects the scope in the truck, and a range bag keeps tins, magazines and the pump together. Pellet traps and reactive airgun targets live on the shooting targets page. Wear shooting glasses every session; pellets and BBs can bounce.
Airgun Pellets FAQs
What is the difference between .177 and .22 pellets?
Size and weight. The two are not interchangeable, so buy the caliber marked on your gun. Within a caliber, try a few weights and shapes to see what groups best.
Can I shoot steel BBs in a pellet gun?
Only if the manufacturer says the gun is made for them. Many rifled pellet guns are not. Check your owner's manual.
Do you sell air rifles?
This page is ammunition and accessories. The only guns on it right now are two Umarex airsoft pistols.
