Saddle Hunting

A saddle puts you in the tree with a lighter load on your back than a hang-on stand. This page carries the full system from Tethrd and its GRIT Workhorse line: saddle kits, platforms, climbing sticks, ropes, packs and the small pieces that make a long sit work. Each part also has its own shelf, linked below the products.

How a Saddle Hunting Setup Fits Together

Every saddle setup answers three questions: what holds you, what you stand on and how you get up the tree. The saddle and its bridge hold you, connected to the trunk by a tree tether. A platform or steps give your feet a place to work. Sticks, a one-stick with an aider, or a ring of steps get you there. Start with saddle hunting kits if you want the core pieces in one box.

From there, build out by job. Saddle hunting platforms come in Regular and XL on the Workhorse V2. Climbing sticks include the GRIT Workhorse 4 pack and a single Hawk Helium Gen 2 stick for adding height. Ropes and tethers cover the 11mm tree tether and an 11mm lineman rope, both 8 feet with a carabiner.

Gear That Makes the Sit Easier

Saddle hunters spend a lot of time with their knees against the bark, which is why saddle hunting knee pads exist. Gear hangers keep a bow, pack and binoculars within reach on a tree with no shooting rail, and the accessories shelf carries the HYS Strap and the GRIT Fold N Go. To carry everything in, the GRIT Platform Pack sits on the saddle hunting backpacks page.

If a saddle is new to you, keep a hang-on or ladder from tree stands in the rotation while you practice low to the ground. A headlamp for the walk in and scent eliminators for the setup finish the list.

Saddle Hunting FAQs

Is saddle hunting safe?

Saddle hunting keeps you attached to the tree once you are set up. The risk is in the climb and the transitions. Follow the manufacturer instructions for every piece, use a lineman rope while climbing and practice close to the ground before you go to height.

What do I need to start saddle hunting?

A saddle with a bridge, a tree tether, a lineman rope, a climbing method and something to stand on. A saddle kit covers the first pieces, and sticks plus a platform cover the rest.

Can I rifle hunt from a saddle?

Yes. Many hunters shoot rifles from a saddle using the tree or a rest for support. Practice your shooting positions from the saddle before the season.
