Tactacam Solar Panels
Short version: a solar panel is what turns a cellular camera from something you service every few weeks into something you hang in August and forget about until you pull it in January. Every panel here has a battery built in, so the camera keeps sending through a week of gray skies.
Picking the right one
- Check your camera generation first. Output voltage differs between Reveal Gen 2 and everything newer. The R5 panel covers X 3.0, Pro 3.0, X 4.0, Pro 4.0 and the Defend Cam.
- Fixed or folding. A fixed panel mounts with the camera and works when the setup gets real sun. A folding panel runs out to the one hole in the canopy, which is the answer for cameras buried in timber.
- Conversion efficiency. The current R5 panel runs 21%, up from 18% on the previous generation. That gap shows up in November when daylight gets short.
- Buffer capacity. The built-in cell is what carries the camera through overcast stretches. Without one, a cloudy week means a dead camera.
Most setups start with the Reveal Solar Panel R5 ($69.99), which has a 5,000 mAh cell and an adjustable bracket for aiming at the sun instead of the tree. If your camera sits under heavy canopy, the folding 12V panel ($99.99) lets you separate the power source from the camera. Running a Defend security camera instead, the Defend Cam Solar Panel ($59.99) is the matching part. Buying the panel and battery together, the R5 Power Bundle ($109.99) saves twenty dollars over separate purchases.
Our trail camera battery life guide covers what actually drains a cellular camera, and where to place a trail camera is worth reading before you hang a panel, since sun exposure and deer traffic rarely want the same tree.
