Silhouette Decoys

Twelve full-body geese fill the back of a truck. Twelve silos fit under one arm. Silhouettes let you put a hundred birds on the X in a single trip, and the flicker they throw as geese work the spread reads as movement from the air. Canada, snow, blue, specklebelly and mallard, in standard, motion and flocked, with stakes and a bag to carry them.

Why Hunters Run Silhouette Decoys

A silhouette is a flat printed decoy on a stake. Stack twelve of them and they take up a fraction of the room of twelve full-bodies, which is the whole argument for walk-in hunts, small trucks and big spreads. Geese see them as solid birds from most angles, and the trick is to set them facing several directions so the spread never goes edge-on and vanishes all at once. Most hunters mix silhouettes with a core of full-bodies from the goose decoys shelf, keeping the 3D birds near the landing hole and the flats on the edges.

Set the flats in family groups of four to eight with gaps between the groups, and leave a clear landing hole in front of the blind. Then walk out the way the birds will come in and look back. Five minutes of checking for edge-on gaps saves a morning of flared birds.

Standard FLATS are the budget way to fill space. Motion and flocked motion versions sit higher on the price ladder, so compare them side by side on the product pages before you commit. FLATS Motion Silhouette Stakes are sold separately in tall and short; check the product page for which silhouettes they fit. For snow goose hunts, where spreads get huge, standard snow/juvie/blue FLATS give you the most birds for the space.

Turkey Silhouette Decoys

The Higdon FLEX line brings the same packable idea to spring: a feeder hen, an upright tom, and a tom-and-hen pair. A flat silhouette packs smaller than a hard-body, which suits run-and-gun hunts where you set up on a gobble and move again in twenty minutes. If you prefer 3D birds for a set-and-wait hunt, the turkey decoys shelf has Higdon hard-body hens and jakes. Round out the spring kit with turkey calls and a turkey vest with room for the decoys.

Storage, Stakes and Setup

The Higdon FLATS Silhouette Decoy Bag is the piece most people forget until they are picking up silos one armful at a time in the dark. Spare stakes live here and on the decoy rigging page. For the rest of the field hunt, add goose calls, a layout from our waterfowl blinds, and blind bags for shells and gear.

Silhouette Decoys FAQs

Do silhouette decoys work for geese?

Yes, especially in numbers and mixed with some full-bodies. Set them at varied angles so the spread stays visible as birds circle.

Can silhouettes be used on water?

No. They are staked into the ground, so use them in fields, on sandbars and along shorelines. Use floaters on open water.

How many silhouette decoys should I buy?

Start with two or three 12-packs to stretch an existing spread. Snow goose hunters often go far bigger.
