A tent gets judged on one night out of twenty, the one where it rains sideways from midnight until dawn. Everything else is comfort. Our Browning Camping tents split into two ideas: freestanding cabin tents with steel uprights and straight sidewalls for car camping, and lower-profile shelters built to take weather.
Cabin tents or weather tents
- Big Horn 5 ($299.99): five-person freestanding cabin design with fiberglass poles, steel uprights, and enough center height to change clothes standing up. Straight sidewalls mean a cot fits against the wall instead of jamming into the slope.
- Big Horn Two-Room ($449.99): the same cabin build with a room divider, which is the difference between a family trip that works and one where somebody sleeps in the truck.
- Glacier ($499.99): four-person, freestanding two-pole aluminum design with oversized #10 door and vestibule zippers and a polyester oxford floor at roughly twice the weight of standard nylon. Fewer square feet than the Big Horn 5 at a higher price, because you are buying materials rather than volume.
- Basecamp Screen House ($199.99): vertical mesh walls, waterproof seam-sealed roof, color-coded poles. This is where you eat when the bugs win.
- Privacy Shelter ($159.99): freestanding changing and shower room with interior mesh storage and two exterior pockets for dry towels.
Buy the footprint with the tent
A footprint is insurance on the most expensive part of the tent to replace. Browning cuts each one slightly smaller than the tent floor so rain running off the fly cannot get drawn underneath, which is the failure mode of a generic tarp trimmed by eye. Match the model: Big Horn 5 Footprint ($49.99), Glacier Footprint ($59.99), Big Horn Two-Room Footprint ($79.99).
One more sizing note. Tent capacity ratings assume adults sleeping shoulder to shoulder with no gear inside. If you want room for packs and a cot, size up a person or two from the number on the box.
