Thirteen bags from Browning Camping and ALPS Mountaineering, rated from +20°F down to -30°F. Three decisions get you to the right one: how cold it actually gets where you sleep, how much room you want to move, and whether the bag rides in a truck or on your back.
Pick your temperature rating
- +20°F, three-season: the Voyager +20° ($99.99) covers spring through early fall with TechLoft Silver insulation and a brushed polyester liner.
- 0°F, the workhorse: the Discover 0° ($99.99) is the value pick, and the Enterprise 0° ($169.99) trades weight for a cotton canvas shell and a 100% cotton flannel liner.
- -20°F to -30°F, late season: the Denali -30° ($179.99) is a mummy, the McKinley -30° ($229.99) is an oversized hooded rectangle, and the Klondike -30° ($249.99) is the heavy-duty version of the same idea.
- Two people: the Side-by-Side 0° ($249.99) is a rectangular double that unzips into two singles, and two Redwood -10° bags ($179.99 each) zip together the same way.
Mummy or rectangle
A mummy like the Denali seals heat around the shoulders and hood and packs smaller, which is why it wins for cold weather and for anything you carry. A rectangle gives you room to roll over and sleep like a person, at the cost of dead air the bag has to keep warm. Most of our lineup is oversized rectangle for that reason, since the majority of camping happens within a hundred feet of a vehicle.
What the insulation names mean
TechLoft and TechLoft Silver are synthetic fills built from multi-hole micro-denier fibers with a siliconized finish, which keeps loft up and packed size down. PolyLoft shows up in the Enterprise bags. Every bag here uses two-layer offset construction, meaning the insulation layers are staggered so no seam runs straight through to the outside and creates a cold spot. Synthetic also keeps insulating when it gets damp, which matters more in a tent than most people expect.
