Lumens and reach are different numbers

Lumens measure how much light a flashlight puts out in total. Reach depends on how tightly that light is focused, which manufacturers rate in candela or in meters of beam distance. A wide flood beam with huge lumens can light up a whole field and still not reach as far as a tighter beam with fewer lumens. If you need to see across a pasture or down a river, compare rated reach. If you need to light up everything around you, compare lumens.

Handheld spotlights

A spotlight is built around a big reflector and a pistol grip so you can hold it on a target. The High Noon 1800 floats, is submersible, runs on USB charging or a CR123A, and doubles as a power bank. The Streamlight Waypoint 400 has a trigger switch and a rated run time of 3.75 to 87 hours depending on mode. The Cyclops 1400 plugs into a 12V outlet, so it never runs out while the truck is running.

High lumen flashlights

At the top end, the Marauder Mini 2 and Marauder Mini put out 10,000 and 7,000 lumens. The ProTac HL 6 reaches 5,300 lumens on Streamlight's SL-B48 battery. For a light you can still carry every day, the Olight Baton 4 Pro puts out 1,600 lumens and also sits with our EDC flashlights.

Shining a spotlight for deer or other game at night is restricted or illegal in many states, even when you are not carrying a gun. Rules on using artificial light while hunting, including colors, hours and which species it applies to, vary by state. Check your state wildlife agency before you hunt with a light.

High lumen flashlight FAQs

What is the brightest flashlight you can buy at Double D?

The Olight Marauder Mini 2 at 10,000 lumens. Among spotlights, the Cyclops Revo 6000 is the brightest at 6,000 lumens.

How many lumens do I need?

Around camp or the house, 200 to 500 lumens is plenty. For searching a field, a tree line or a river, 1,000 lumens and up starts to matter, and rated reach matters more than the lumen number.

Do high lumen flashlights get hot?

Yes. Running thousands of lumens creates heat, and many high output lights step down their brightness after a short time on high to protect the LED and battery.

Which spotlight floats?

Browning lists the High Noon 850, 1400 and 1800 as floatable.
