Thermal Monoculars & Binoculars

A handheld thermal is the piece most hunters should own first. You use it to find the animal, and you can carry it on any hunt without dedicating it to one rifle. Sweep a field, then decide whether what you found is worth the stalk. If you are looking for something to shoot with, that lives in thermal scopes.

Where to get in

The Athlon Cronus ATS P-Mini 250S at $399 is the cheapest honest thermal on this shelf and it lives in a jacket pocket. The RIX Pocket K3 at $899 gives you more resolution in the same pocketable format. Both do the job people describe when they say they want a thermal scanner, which is picking a hog or a coyote out of a field fast.

Step up to the RIX Titan T3 at $1,799 or the Titan T6 at $2,599 and you are buying reach, so you can identify what you found instead of just knowing something warm is out there.

Hands free options

Anyone working behind dogs or moving through cover wants both hands available. The RIX Stride ST3 Lite at $999 and the Stride ST6 Lite at $2,199 run handheld or off a helmet mount, which covers most of what people are actually asking for when they go looking for thermal goggles.

At the top of the category, the RENVBW14 fusion binocular at $9,299 layers a thermal channel over a Gen2+ image intensified picture, so you get heat detection and natural looking target identification through the same set of eyepieces.

What to compare

  • Sensor resolution. A 384 or 640 core resolves detail a 256 core never captured. Display resolution is a separate number and a sharp screen cannot invent detail the sensor missed.
  • Field of view. Lower base magnification means a wider view, which is what makes a monocular fast to scan with. Digital zoom crops the image and adds nothing.
  • NETD. Thermal sensitivity in millikelvin, lower being better. It earns its money in humidity, rain and fog when heat contrast goes flat.
  • Battery and recording. Long sits eat batteries. Onboard recording is worth having if you scout the same ground repeatedly.

Our thermal monocular breakdown walks through what each price tier delivers in the field. If you want an image intensified picture rather than a heat signature, look at night vision optics, and check thermal hunting laws by state before you hunt with either after dark.
