Deer Scents & Rut Attractants
Deer scent works on a calendar. A doe-in-heat bottle that pulls a buck across a field in the first week of November will do nothing in the last week of September, and the hunters who get the most out of scent are the ones matching the bottle to the phase the deer are actually in. Scent by phase, which is the only way it makes sense
Deer respond to different information at different points in the fall, and running the wrong bottle is worse than running none. An estrus scent in early October tells a buck that something is happening weeks before it should be, and educated deer read that as wrong rather than interesting.
Early season. Cover scents and neutral urine. You are trying to be nothing rather than something.
Pre-rut, roughly late October. Scrape work. Bucks are opening scrapes and working licking branches, and this is when a mock scrape gets checked.
Peak rut, roughly the first half of November in most of the Midwest. Estrus. Bucks are cruising and a hot doe is the only thing on the list.
Post-rut. Back toward neutral and food. Late-season deer are recovering and feeding, and heavy estrus scent has stopped being credible.
Rut timing varies by latitude and by year. Your own trail camera history is better evidence than any published date.
Estrus and doe-in-heat scents
Doe 'N Estrus is the workhorse, a doe-in-heat profile aimed at cruising bucks from the pre-rut through the peak of breeding. It comes as an aerosol that atomizes into a cloud the wind carries, or as a 4 oz liquid you meter onto wicks and drags.

Buck and rut scents
Buc Rut works the other side of the same instinct. Instead of advertising a doe, it tells a buck that another buck has moved into his core area, which pulls a territorial response rather than a breeding one. Aerosol or 4 oz liquid.
Forehead Gland Synthetic copies the scent a buck leaves on a licking branch from the gland on his forehead, the signature that tells every deer through there who has been by. It is synthetic and carries no natural urine.

Scrapes and licking branches
A mock scrape is the highest-return scent setup there is, because it puts a deer in a specific spot facing a specific direction at a range you chose.

Delivery matters as much as the bottle. Liquid poured on the ground is gone by the next rain.

Scent only helps once your own is handled. A buck that has already winded you is not going to be talked out of it by a wick. Natural urine and your state regulations
A number of states restrict or ban the use of natural deer urine over chronic wasting disease concerns, and the rules change between seasons. Synthetic products such as the Forehead Gland Synthetic are one route around that, but the only reliable answer is the current regulations from your state wildlife agency. In Missouri that is the Department of Conservation. Check before the season, not at the truck.
Frequently asked questions
When should you start using doe estrus?
Late pre-rut, as bucks begin cruising and checking scrapes, and through the peak of breeding. In much of the Midwest that lands from the last days of October into mid-November. Before that, scrape scents and neutral urine do more for you.
How long does a scent wick last?
A charged wick holds usable scent for a sit, less in wind or rain. Wicks are reusable, so plan on recharging each time rather than hanging one and leaving it for a week. A Scent Hammock holding a bottle keeps working far longer than a wick does.
Do synthetic deer scents work as well as natural urine?
They work on the same behaviours, and the forehead gland and interdigital signatures are copied closely enough that deer respond to them. Where synthetics genuinely win is legality and shelf stability, since natural urine can be restricted and does degrade.
How far from the stand should you hang a scent wick?
Close enough to hold a deer inside your effective range and off to the side of your shooting lane rather than in it. Twenty to thirty yards upwind of the stand, positioned so a deer working to the scent gives you a broadside angle, is the usual setup.
What is the difference between an attractant and a cover scent?
An attractant is meant to pull a deer in. A cover scent is meant to make you unremarkable. Fresh Earth, cedar and pine wafers are cover scents. Doe estrus, Buc Rut and the scrape products are attractants. Running an attractant without handling your own odour is the common mistake.
Can you reuse a scent wafer?
Wafers carry the scent internally and keep releasing until they are spent, so they are used until they stop rather than recharged. Felt wicks are the reusable option, and the Wafer Blade refill packs exist so the Blade Driver keeps running.
